A 25-year-old woman from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China, initially pregnant with nine babies, ultimately gave birth to just two, sharing her incredible journey on social media.
According to a report by Jimu News on Thursday, the woman, identified only as Hou, made headlines when she revealed her pregnancy with nine babies. After struggling with infertility for a year following her marriage, Hou successfully conceived in October with the help of ovulation-stimulating injections.
During her first ultrasound, doctors discovered eight pregnancy sacs in her uterus. But when she returned for a follow-up exam a week later, even more surprising news came: one additional sac had been found. Remarkably, all nine sacs had detectable heartbeats, confirming that all the babies were viable.
However, due to the high risks associated with carrying nine babies, doctors advised Hou to undergo fetal reduction to decrease the number of pregnancies for her health and safety. They recommended reducing the pregnancy to three or fewer babies, given Hou’s petite frame and delicate health.
After weighing the risks, as well as considering their financial and parenting challenges, Hou and her husband made the heart-wrenching decision to reduce the pregnancy and only carry two babies to term.
Hou underwent two fetal reduction procedures and is now hopeful for the safe delivery of her twins. She expressed her hopes for a healthy pregnancy and delivery in the months ahead.
Interestingly, Hou’s case isn’t the first time a woman has given birth to multiple babies at once. In May 2021, 25-year-old Halima Cissé from Morocco set the official world record by giving birth to nine babies.
Cissé’s pregnancy came with its own surprises: although ultrasounds initially detected only seven embryos, two more babies were born during the delivery, bringing the total to nine. This incredible feat surpassed the previous record held by Natalie Suleman, famously known as Octomom, who gave birth to eight babies in California in 2009.
