A Korean tourist has been shot and killed by an armed robber in Koreatown, Angeles City, in northern Philippines.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Sunday, when the tourist was reportedly shot while resisting two assailants on a motorcycle who were attempting to steal his bag.

The victim was transported to a hospital about 30 minutes after the incident, following a report from bystanders, but was later pronounced dead.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Korean consulate in the Philippines immediately requested a prompt investigation from local police and is providing necessary consular assistance.

Rising Incidents Targeting Korean Nationals in the Philippines

The Korean Embassy in the Philippines issued an emergency safety advisory, warning that public security has become increasingly unstable ahead of the country’s general elections in May amid growing political tensions. The embassy emphasized that serious crimes are not limited to areas densely populated by Korean nationals or late-night hours, urging heightened caution.

Recently, a string of violent crimes against Korean nationals has been reported in the Philippines.

On April 4, a Korean national who had been kidnapped by robbers from his home was released after 20 days in captivity. In March, another Korean national was shot and killed by armed robbers in a busy commercial district in Manila.

To prevent further incidents, the Korean Embassy has advised Korean residents and travelers to store emergency contact numbers for the embassy, local Korean associations, and police stations in their mobile phones, to refrain from going out at night, and to maintain positive relationships with residents.

Philippine police are currently investigating the latest incident to apprehend the suspects. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and working on additional safety measures to prevent further harm.

Korean travelers to the Philippines are strongly advised to stay alert and take extra precautions given the deteriorating security conditions.
