A remarkable story has emerged about a rare red pearl, sometimes called the Hermès of pearls, discovered while eating sea snails.
According to Bastille Post, the incident took place in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China. A woman was dining with relatives at a local restaurant when she bit down on something hard. She heard a crack as she chewed on an unfamiliar object.
Experts estimate this rare find could fetch up to $68,000 in the market.
Initially, the woman thought she had bitten into sand or a shell fragment and quickly spat it out. However, the object turned out to be a stunning red pearl. This rare variety is produced in just one of every 50,000 sea snails, making it an incredibly rare find. Due to its rarity, some have even dubbed it the Hermès of pearls.
She said, “I grew up by the sea, but I’ve never heard of such a pearl before. It’s pure luck, so I’ll treasure it and won’t sell it.”
The media reported on this discovery, “This pearl is said to be impossible to cultivate artificially,” and added, “Depending on its color and shape, the price could reach up to 1 million yuan (approximately $136,600).”
In September 2021, another woman in Anhui Province, China, found a golden pearl while eating grilled sea snails. At the time, experts estimated the pearl’s value to be at least 50,000 yuan (approximately $6,830).
Similarly, in 2017, a woman in South Korea made headlines after discovering a rare pearl while eating boiled abalone. An appraisal confirmed that it was a naturally occurring pearl, and its color was determined to be a natural formation.
