The Final Whistle: Midtjylland’s Journey from Despair to Victory

Michelle Kang Views

Cho Gue Sung claimed the league championship cup in his first season in Europe.

On May 27, Midtjylland tied 3-3 with Silkeborg in the 10th round of the 2023-24 Danish Superliga championship held at MCH Arena in Herning, Denmark.

With an additional point, Midtjylland achieved a comeback victory with 63 points (19 wins, 6 draws, 7 losses).

At the same time, Brøndby IF stayed in second place with 62 points (18 wins, 8 draws, 6 losses) after losing 2-3 to Aarhus. Midtjylland won the championship by leading Brøndby IF by one point.

This is Midtjylland’s first league championship in four years. Founded in 1999, Midtjylland won its first league championship in the 2014-15 season, followed by victories in the 2017-18 and 2019-20 seasons, but had no consecutive victories in the past three seasons.

Especially last season, they suffered a blow to their pride by falling to 7th place in the league.

Midtjylland’s chances of winning the last match were not high. Brøndby IF, which was tied at 62 points and ranked first, was significantly ahead in goal difference, making a self-reliant victory virtually impossible.

To make matters worse, the home crowd was in a panic after conceding two goals in the first half. On the other hand, Brøndby IF took control of the game when Rasmus Lauritsen scored the opening goal against AGF Aarhus.

However, a strange tide formed in the second half. Midtjylland turned the game around just seven minutes into the second half with consecutive goals from Franculino Dju, Ola Brynhildsen, and Aral Şimşir.

On the other hand, Brøndby IF conceded three goals to the opponent’s offense.

In the end, Midtjylland conceded a tying goal to Callum McCowatt in the closing stages of the second half, but Brøndby IF failed to turn the game around, allowing Midtjylland to clinch the championship for the first time in four years.

On this day, Cho stood tall as the main contributor to the dramatic victory, assisting his team’s equalizing goal.

Three minutes into the second half, he connected a perfect through pass to the charging Brynhildsen from the penalty arc, and Brynhildsen cleanly finished with a left-footed shot to score.

Cho, who lifted the championship cup in his debut season in the Danish Superliga, draped the Korean flag over his body during the awards ceremony and hung the winning medal around his neck.

He then popped champagne and enjoyed the victory ceremony with his teammates.

Unfortunately, he ended the season by swallowing a bitter pill in the Golden Boot race. Cho recorded 12 goals and 4 assists in 30 games, ranking fifth in the league’s scoring standings.
