Hanwha Eagles Face Leadership Crisis as Manager and CEO Resign

Sarah Lim Views

Last season, despite fans’ expectations, the Hanwha Eagles parted ways with manager Carlos Subero mid-season. In his place, Manager Choi Won Ho took over, but he is now leaving the team.

After just a year, Choi decided to voluntarily step down from his position at Hanwha.

On May 27, Hanwha announced, “Manager Choi Won Ho and CEO Park Chan Hyeok have voluntarily resigned.”

According to Hanwha, Choi expressed his intention to resign from the club after the game on May 23, a day when Hanwha suffered an 8-4 loss to the LG Twins.

The club deliberated over Choi’s resignation and decided to respect his wishes on May 26. Despite securing two consecutive wins against the SSG Landers on May 24 and 25, the team judged that a comprehensive recovery would be difficult.

The club stated, “CEO Park Chan Hyeok has also decided to resign, signifying that both the field and the front office share the responsibility.”

For the time being, Chief Coach Jung Kyung Bae will serve as the acting manager.

The club added, “We plan to appoint a new manager as soon as possible to restore the team and continue the season.”

Meanwhile, the Hanwha Eagles started the season with a seven-game winning streak. They were in first place in March. However, after a series of losses, they fell to the bottom of the rankings.

They have experienced every position from first to tenth place.

Currently, they have managed to secure two consecutive wins and are sitting in eighth place with a win rate of 0.420. Below Hanwha, the Lotte Giants are in ninth place, and the Kiwoom Heroes are in tenth.
