From Stardom to Solitary: Singer’s Jailhouse Blues After DUI Crash

Trot singer Kim Ho Joong has been transferred to the Seoul Detention Center and is currently held in solitary confinement.

On June 4, Channel A’s Powerful 4 Team reported that Kim has been assigned to solitary confinement at the Seoul Detention Center since his arrest on May 24, after initially being held in solitary confinement at the Seoul Gangnam Police Station.

According to the report, the reason why Kim was assigned to solitary confinement was because the detention center deemed it necessary for him to have a period of adjustment and education.

In addition, it was reported that “Kim, a well-known detainee through the media and a criminal who caused social controversy, was classified internally. The decision was made considering various factors such as potential harassment from other inmates or the risk of self-harm due to sudden psychological changes.”

A correctional official said, “There is a possibility that he may move to a shared dormitory room or another room after he adjusts well,” but also added, “So far, the likelihood of him remaining in solitary confinement is high.”

The solitary confinement cell where Kim is held is in the same building as the solitary cells where singer Jung Joon Young, who was involved in the Burning Sun scandal, and Cho Ju Bin, the perpetrator of the Nth Room sexual exploitation case, were held.

Looking at the released floor plan of the solitary cell, it is a room of approximately 16.2 square feet, equipped with a partition, a toilet, a sink, a blanket, and a television.

Watching TV is allowed from 5 to 9 PM, strictly limited to terrestrial channels.

It was also reported that a surveillance CCTV camera was installed in the solitary cell.

Meanwhile, Kim was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and hit-and-run, causing an accident by colliding with a taxi on a road in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu, at around 11:40 PM on May 9, and then fleeing the scene.

He initially claimed that he had not been drinking for the last ten days, but eventually admitted to drunk driving.

On May 31, the Seoul Gangnam Police Station sent Kim to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, applying charges of dangerous driving causing injury, fleeing the scene, driving under the influence, failure to take measures after an accident, and aiding and abetting a criminal under the Specific Crime Aggravated Punishment Act and the Road Traffic Act.
