Singer and actress IU has revealed her battle with a rare condition, Skeeter Syndrome, to her fans for the first time.
On Thursday, IU appeared as a guest on the YouTube channel You In Radio, where she had an intimate conversation with host Yoo In Na. During the video, the popular Korean star shared her experience with the health condition, shedding light on how it affects her daily life.
In the video, IU explained, “When a mosquito bites me, it causes a severe reaction,” adding, “If I get bitten in certain areas, it swells up into a huge bump.”
She continued, “It gets so bad that I need to take antibiotics because it oozes and becomes really painful,” describing her condition as a type of mosquito allergy.
In response, Yoo In Na identified IU’s symptoms, saying, “That’s called Skeeter Syndrome,” to which IU nodded in agreement. “That’s right,” she confirmed. “The area where I get bitten swells up severely, and blisters form.”
IU explained that mosquito bites on her face are particularly distressing. As a public figure, her appearance is crucial to her career, making the condition even more challenging.
“Mosquitoes always bite my face, leaving scars,” IU remarked. “The areas where I was bitten as a child still have some dead skin.” She added, “There are parts of my face that feel numb, even when pricked with a needle. That’s why I dislike mosquitoes even more than cockroaches.”
Skeeter Syndrome, the condition IU suffers from, is an allergic reaction to mosquito bites that modern medicine still has no definitive cure for.
People with Skeeter Syndrome have a much stronger immune response to mosquito bites than those without the condition. As a result, the bitten areas swell significantly, and blisters may form. This condition is widespread in children with weaker immune systems.
If symptoms appear, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately. If left untreated, the symptoms can persist for over 10 days. In addition, if blisters are not adequately treated, secondary infections are at risk.
