The whereabouts of the mastermind behind voice phishing scams under the alias Kim Mi Young are still unknown since he escaped from a Philippine Prison on May 1. He was identified as a man named Park who is in his 50s.
He reportedly converted hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Bitcoin into cash while in prison.
South Korean media outlet, Chosun Ilbo, reported on May 23 that Park was confirmed to have freely used a mobile phone while in a Philippine prison.
According to the report, Park is suspected of orchestrating fraudulent activities such as illegal gambling and voice phishing using his mobile phone.
He is believed to have converted the Bitcoin he had hidden with the help of his close associate named Shin, a nine-time offender, who was also imprisoned with him.
Shin is suspected of having aided in Park’s escape. Although Shin has a history of escaping from prison twice in the Philippines, he’s currently not on the run and is still in prison.
As authorities are tracking him down, Park is believed to be living off the profits from the Bitcoin he converted.
Originally a police officer in charge of cybercrime, Park was dismissed in 2008 on charges of taking bribes. Despite his dismissal, he was known for his fearless dealings with organized gangs during his tenure, maintaining close contact with many of the gangs he befriended even after he departed from the force.
In 2012, he went to the Philippines, set up a base for voice phishing, and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars through “Team Leader Kim Mi Young” text messages.
