A fishing boat carrying 27 people has sunk off the coast of Biyangdo Island, located near Jeju, South Korea. The Coast Guard has launched a search for the missing crew members.

On Friday, the Coast Guard received a distress call from a nearby fishing vessel reporting that a Busan-registered fishing boat (129 tons, purse seiner) sank approximately 24 kilometers (about 14.9 miles) northwest of Biyangdo Island.

The vessel was carrying 16 South Koreans and 11 foreign crew members at the time of the incident. Nearby fishing boats were able to rescue 15 of the crew, two of whom were found unconscious.

By 6 AM, reports confirmed that the vessel had completely sunk.

The Coast Guard is currently deploying all available rescue resources to locate the 12 remaining missing crew members.
