A couple in Oregon recently found themselves in an unexpected situation when only five guests showed up to their wedding.
As reported by the New York Post on Wednesday, Shane and Marie, who had been together for nine years, were left in shock when they opened the doors to their wedding venue and prepared to walk down the aisle. To their surprise, only five guests had arrived to celebrate their big day, leaving the venue nearly empty.
According to Marie, the couple had initially planned to marry in 2019. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to postpone their wedding. Starting in January 2024, the couple began announcing their rescheduled wedding plans for October on social media, hoping for a larger turnout. Marie shared, “Over the past 10 months, I sent online invitations to over 75 people. I also personally invited more than 25 people, including seniors and others not on social media. But to my surprise, only five showed up.”
The couple said, “This experience really made us reflect on our lives…”
Originally scheduled for 1:00 PM, the ceremony was postponed to 2:00 PM after realizing no guests had arrived. Despite the delay, the final guest count remained at just five.
Marie added, “I kept wondering, Why did this happen? Am I such a bad person? What could my husband have done that made this happen?”
She continued, “It hurts even more that people I considered friends never explained why they didn’t come, or why they didn’t send any congratulatory messages. I’m still processing the shame and sadness.”
The couple concluded, “Through this wedding, we were able to clearly see who truly cares about us. We’ve looked back on our lives and become more grateful for what we have.”
While their wedding day may not have gone as planned, their wedding video has gone viral, receiving over 8.8 million views on TikTok. Congratulatory messages from people around the world have flooded in, offering support and well-wishes.
