Rodrigo Bentancur, a midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur, has been handed an unexpectedly severe penalty following racially insensitive remarks made about his teammate and team captain, Son Heung Min.

During an interview in June, Bentancur reportedly responded to a request for Son’s jersey by saying, “How about Son Heung Min’s cousin’s jersey? Anyway, they all look the same.”

The comment, which many considered racially insensitive, sparked widespread outrage. Bentancur’s remarks were widely criticized for perpetuating the stereotype that all East Asians look alike.

Following the backlash, the English Football Association (FA) imposed a seven-match suspension and a £100,000 fine (approximately $126,300) on Bentancur. Although the fine is significant, considering Bentancur’s reported weekly salary of £75,000 (around $94,720), the seven-match ban is considered a particularly harsh punishment.

This penalty surprised many, as soccer fans expected a more lenient response. However, the decision has been hailed by some as a recognition of Son Heung Min’s stature within the sport and an effort to take a firm stand against racism.

The FA confirmed the penalty on Monday, saying, “While Bentancur denied the charges, the disciplinary committee determined that his actions violated regulations related to racism.”

The ban is expected to significantly impact Tottenham, which is currently competing for top positions in the Premier League.

Bentancur’s apology, which many considered lacking sincerity, has also stirred controversy. In response to the criticism, Bentancur apologized on his Instagram Story, a feature where posts disappear after 24 hours. His quick, seemingly superficial apology did little to quell the anger surrounding his comments.

Tottenham’s Son Heung Min accepted Bentancur’s apology, stating, “Bentancur acknowledged his mistake and apologized to me. We are like brothers.” Ahead of Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League match against Qarabag, Son reiterated his support for his teammate, saying, “I accepted Bentancur’s sincere apology. We are all human, and everyone makes mistakes.”

Despite Son’s acceptance of the apology, anti-racism organization Kick It Out, which has long campaigned against discrimination in soccer, continued to press the issue. The group criticized Tottenham for not doing enough to protect players from racist behavior, leading to growing pressure on the club and the FA.

In response to the ongoing controversy, both Tottenham Hotspur and the Football Association took action, demonstrating their commitment to tackling racism in the sport.
