Isak Andic, the founder of the Spanish fashion retailer Mango, died at the age of 71 in a mountain hiking accident.

El Pais reported on Saturday that Catalonian police confirmed Andic’s death after he slipped and fell from a 150-meter (500 ft) cliff while hiking with relatives in the Montserrat caves near Barcelona.

Andic’s only son was at the accident scene and made the emergency call around 12:30 PM that day.

The emergency service dispatched a medical helicopter and ambulance to the scene. Tragically, they discovered Andic’s body midway between the Salnitre Cave and Montserrat Monastery.

Born in Istanbul in 1953, Andic moved to Spain with his family when he was 13.

He demonstrated his entrepreneurial skills in high school by selling T-shirts to his classmates. In 1984, he and his brother Nahman opened the first Mango store in Barcelona.

The iconic name “Mango” came from a delicious fruit Andic tasted on a trip to the Philippines.

Today, Mango is a global fashion retailer with around 3,000 stores in over 120 countries and an annual revenue of 3.1 billion euros (approximately $3.3 billion).

Forbes Estimates Andic’s Net Worth at $4.5 Billion

According to Forbes, Andic’s net worth as Mango’s non-executive chairman is $4.5 billion.

Toni Ruiz, CEO of Mango, paid tribute to Andic: “His departure leaves a huge void but all of us are, in some way, his legacy and the testimony of his achievements. It is up to us, and this is the best tribute we can make to Isak and which we will fulfill to ensure that Mango continues to be the project that Isak aspired to and of which he would feel proud.”

Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, expressed his condolences on X: “All my love and recognition for your great work and business vision, which has turned this Spanish firm into a world leader in fashion.”
