South Korean Rep. Jang Kyung Tae of the Democratic Party has called for an official explanation regarding what he describes as shocking information he received about First Lady Kim Keon Hee’s activities on the day the state of emergency was declared in South Korea.
At a press conference on Monday, Jang claimed, “On December 3, Kim Keon Hee entered a plastic surgery clinic at 6:25 PM and stayed there for three hours until 9:30 PM — just one hour before the state of emergency was declared.”
Jang expressed suspicion, saying, “Kim left the clinic exactly one hour before the emergency declaration, which suggests that, as a civilian, she may have had prior knowledge of the emergency being declared.” He added, “We received a tip-off about this sighting ten days ago, and we have since verified the credibility of this information.”
According to the tip-off, Kim was reportedly at OOO Plastic Surgery in Seoul’s Gangnam district on the afternoon of December 3. The witness detailed that Kim arrived in a luxury Carnival limousine and entered the clinic’s parking lot near Sinsa Station’s Exit 4, eventually heading to the fifth floor. The tipster also noted that five security personnel arrived at the clinic and took a vehicle logbook.
Lawmaker Questions Kim’s Decision to Visit Clinic During State of Emergency
Jang further questioned, “The clinic’s director was appointed a presidential advisor in July 2022. Why did Kim travel to Gangnam for the procedure when the director could have been called to the presidential office or residence instead? Was there a specific reason she couldn’t have stayed at the residence that day?”
Following the press conference, Jang voiced his concerns during informal conversations with reporters.
Jang added, “Typically, Kim Keon Hee does not visit the clinic herself; the director usually travels to her. So, why did the director not travel and Kim instead visit the clinic in person on the day of the emergency? This raises strong suspicions.” He continued, “As a civilian, she should not know national security matters, especially during a state of emergency. There must be a reason why she hurriedly moved to the presidential residence an hour before the emergency was declared.”
In conclusion, Jang demanded, “We need to know if President Yoon Seok Yeol was with former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun and others when they allegedly planned the emergency declaration at a secure location. We must also understand what Kim Keon Hee was doing for those three hours at the plastic surgery clinic.”
