As the launch of the iPhone 16 is anticipated this fall, there is speculation that all the traditional mechanical buttons will be replaced with capacitive buttons.
On May 22, IT specialist media AppleInsider reported that the buttons on the iPhone 16 series will take a step further in evolution.
An Action Button will be added to all products in the iPhone 16 series.
Apple has been introducing the Action Button feature to the iPhone Pro models. The Action Button, introduced by the iPhone 15 Pro, is a button that users can use to designate commonly performed actions.
A new Capture Button is also expected to be introduced.
The Capture Button, which will be introduced in the iPhone 16 series, works like a two-stage button on a digital camera. It can detect various pressure levels, allowing users to fix and adjust the focus by pressing lightly or halfway and capturing an image or video by pressing completely.
It is also known to support zoom-in and zoom-out functions.
Another noticeable change is the Capacitive Button (Solid State Button).
All buttons in the iPhone 16 series are expected to be capacitive, which gives the effect of pressing a button with just a light touch and a vibration.
Originally, Apple planned to use solid-state buttons in the iPhone 15 Pro lineup launched in 2023, but the plan was reportedly scrapped due to technical problems.
Quoting a report from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, AppleInsider reported that Apple has placed a large order for capacitive button-related components with Taiwan’s ASE.
The newly applied capacitive button is expected to use a haptic engine motor on both sides to generate vibration feedback every time the button is pressed.
This is reportedly very similar to the click operation of Apple’s Magic Trackpad.
The component is scheduled to be produced in the third quarter, and Apple needs to ship products in large quantities by the end of the third quarter, so it is speculated that it may be applied to the iPhone 17 series instead of the iPhone 16.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 series is scheduled to be released in September, and for the first time, Apple has included Korea in the first release countries.
