Apple Finally Lets You Record Calls—After 17 Years

Apple has officially launched its AI-powered intelligence feature, which includes call recording, through a recent operating system update.

Apple rolled out software updates on Tuesday for the iPhone operating system (iOS 18.1), iPad operating system (iPadOS 18.1), and Mac operating system (macOS Sequoia 15.1).

Apple’s first official support for call recording is the most significant addition to this update. When a user begins recording during a call, the other party is automatically notified that the recording has started.

After the call ends, Apple Intelligence transcribes the conversation and generates a summary. This marks the first time call recording has been introduced to the iPhone since its initial release in 2007, nearly 17 years ago.

In addition, Apple has unveiled AI-powered writing tools that can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text. The rewriting feature tailors user-generated content to match the appropriate tone for the intended audience and task, while the proofreading tool checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure, offering valuable editing suggestions.

While Korean call recording and AI features are expected to be introduced next year, the current update focuses on U.S. users.

This update also enhances Siri, the voice assistant, providing more natural language understanding and improved capabilities. Users can now input commands by typing, and Siri is equipped with extensive knowledge about Apple products, allowing it to respond to thousands of questions regarding their features and settings.

The Photos app now enables users to search for images and videos using descriptive phrases, such as “Young Hee wearing a red dress.” A new cleanup tool has been added to seamlessly remove unwanted objects or people from photos.

Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI feature, will be rolled out gradually with varying functionality and language support. The update only supports American English, requiring users to set their device and Siri language to U.S. English to access these features.

Apple plans to introduce support for local English variants in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom in December. Next year, support for Korean, Chinese, French, German, and other languages is expected to be added.

Looking ahead, Apple intends to expand its AI capabilities to include emoji generation, image creation, enhanced writing tools, information search through the camera, and integration with ChatGPT.
