Threads Closes the Gap on X as Zuckerberg Takes on Musk

James Yoo Views

Meta’s social media app Threads, launched by Mark Zuckerberg, is quickly catching up to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) in terms of mobile user numbers just two years after its launch.

According to data released on Monday by Similarweb, Threads averaged 115.1 million daily active mobile users in May. This number is very close to X’s 132 million daily mobile users during the same period, highlighting the growing competition between the two platforms.

The decline in X’s user base has been widely linked to controversies surrounding its owner, Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Since last November, following the U.S. presidential election, Musk’s close ties to former President Donald Trump have sparked criticism. The situation intensified when Musk was controversially appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), leading many users who oppose Trump to leave the platform.

Bluesky Emerges as a Rising Alternative

In this rapidly evolving social media landscape, Bluesky has garnered attention as a notable alternative to X. Following the U.S. presidential election, Bluesky’s mobile users surged by a staggering 372.5% year-over-year, reaching 4.1 million. This rapid growth reflects how political preferences increasingly influence which social platforms users choose.

Despite these shifts in mobile, X remains the dominant player in the web environment. Last month, X averaged 145.8 million daily visitors on the web, approximately 20 times more than Threads, which had 6.9 million daily web visitors. This significant difference highlights the substantial variation in social media usage between mobile apps and desktop web browsing.
