Transgender Man Successfully Gets Pregnant in Vietnam

Christine Jung Views

A transgender man, who had undergone female-to-male sex-change surgery, has made headlines after becoming pregnant.

On June 4, Vietnamese media outlet SOHA shared the story of the couple, Nguyen Hoang Son (26) and Xuan Huyen (35).

The couple recently got married and officially became a wedded couple.

This couple is a bit special because Xuan is a transgender man who has undergone a sex change, from female to male.

Since he was still legally recognized as a woman, he was able to register his marriage with Nguyen.

After getting married, Nguyen often expressed his desire to have a child. However, since Xuan didn’t want a child, Nguyen sought help from Xuan’s mother.

After multiple sessions of persuasion, Xuan finally agreed to have a child.

Being a man who transitioned from a woman, Xuan needed to mentally prepare before getting pregnant.

The couple thought it would be tough for Xuan to get pregnant as he had undergone a mastectomy to become a man and had not menstruated for five years after injecting male hormones.

Surprisingly, Xuan started to menstruate again just a week after stopping the hormone injections, and two months later, they received news of his pregnancy.

However, the joy was short-lived as Nguyen and Xuan often fought due to the pregnancy.

Xuan shared his struggles, “After stopping the hormone injections for pregnancy, my body became more feminine, and hormonal changes made me more irritable.”

He added, “I wanted to talk to Nguyen, but I thought he wouldn’t understand even if I explained, so I held back. Gradually, negative emotions piled up, making me more tired.”

The journey of their child delivery was unique too. A few days before the due date, the couple went to the hospital for a cesarean section procedure.

About 15 minutes before entering the delivery room, Xuan started to have severe contractions, and soon after, he gave birth to a healthy baby.

Xuan surprised the nurses by walking normally not long after the surgery, unlike other mothers who had undergone cesarean sections and needed to practice walking.

Xuan said, “Since I had my breasts removed, the baby is currently drinking formula. Nguyen and I have come a long way through the unstable period when we had a child, and we now understand each other much better. I want to continue to spend the rest of our days together like this.”
