Fatal Shooting of South Korean National in Manila Sparks Safety Concerns

James Yoo Views

A South Korean national has tragically become the victim of a fatal shooting during a robbery on the busy streets of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

According to GMA News and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines, the incident occurred Friday in the Malate district of Manila. The South Korean man was shot by a robber and was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.

The man, who was a local resident, reportedly struggled with two robbers who were attempting to pickpocket him. The assailants shot the man.

The incident occurred in the Malate district, a well-known commercial and tourist area in Manila, home to the city’s Koreatown.

Surveillance footage from the scene shows the man walking with a woman down a busy street before turning into an alley. At that point, four robbers on two motorcycles got off and chased after them.

After the attack, the four perpetrators fled the scene on their motorcycles, which had been parked nearby.

After the incident, the woman and the victim ran to a nearby convenience store for help.

Local authorities are currently searching for the suspects and investigating the motives behind the crime.

According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 2015 to mid-2022, 38 South Koreans were murdered in the Philippines, making up 44% of the 86 homicide victims from all Asia-Pacific countries.

In a similar incident last year, a South Korean man died in Angeles City, located on the northern island of Luzon, after being severely injured during a pickpocketing attempt. In 2016, a South Korean businessman was kidnapped and murdered by three active-duty police officers.

In response to the shooting incident, the South Korean Embassy in the Philippines issued a safety notice on Monday, urging South Korean nationals residing there to review the safety guidelines to prevent crime and protect their well-being.

The embassy recommended several safety precautions, including avoiding nighttime outings, exercising caution when using taxis or other vehicles, and refraining from excessive resistance in the event of a crime.
