Want a U.S. Green Card? It’ll Cost You $5 Million Now

A new U.S. immigration program dubbed the Gold Card, which grants permanent residency in exchange for a $5 million investment, is drawing overwhelming global interest.

According to the Financial Times on Monday, more than 68,000 foreign nationals have already joined the waitlist on the application portal created by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The program was unveiled in February by President Donald Trump as a replacement for the existing EB-5 investor visa program. Trump said the initiative aims to help reduce the national debt by attracting capital from high-net-worth individuals overseas.

Gold Card vs. EB-5: What’s the Difference?

The previous EB-5 visa program allowed foreign investors to apply for U.S. permanent residency with a minimum investment of $1.8 million. In 2023, about 14,000 people obtained green cards through the EB-5 program.

Despite the Gold Card’s significantly higher investment threshold, nearly triple that of the EB-5, it has garnered even greater attention from global investors.

Details such as eligibility criteria, qualifying countries, and tax benefits have yet to be finalized. However, the U.S. Department of Commerce has stated that it plans to issue formal guidelines and begin accepting full applications soon.
